On most vehicles, you can check your coolant level by peeking into the radiator fluid reservoir tank. Wait until your engine is cool, then simply pop the hood of your vehicle, identify the coolant reservoir (usually a small transparent tank with MAX {maximum}/MIN {minimum} or FULL/ADD lines marked on the side), and look for a cap with “engine coolant” or “antifreeze” stamped on the top.
Antifreeze or coolant (the terms are interchangeable) is clear when it is manufactured. Dye is used to color the antifreeze for identification and marketing purposes only. So if you were used to the tried-and-true green coolant and just opened a jug full of orange fluid, don't be alarmed. Time was when coolants were one color: green.
Antifreeze. Radiator coolant is itself the antifreeze coolant. Antifreeze is a glycol-based liquid. It helps cool your car engine. It prevents the radiator in cars from overheating. Minimizes engine heat and allow your car engine to last longer. Improves the proper functioning of heat exchangers.
What is antifreeze? Antifreeze is commonly used as one of the components of a coolant mixture – coolant is generally a 50-50 split between antifreeze and water. Antifreeze (specifically the ethylene glycol, which is its main ingredient) is used to lower the freezing point of the liquid that circulates around the engine of a vehicle.
Obviously it's better than letting the radiator run dry, and technically there are other lubricating additives you could substitute. But really you pretty much always need at least a little anti-freeze in a modern engine or it will be unhappy. If you can't get it, your best substitute is generally some kind of alcohol.
COOLANT/ANTIFREEZE. Antifreeze is one of the components of a coolant mixture (coolant is generally a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water). Antifreeze is used to lower the freezing point and raise the boiling point of the liquid that circulates around the engine of a vehicle. This helps prevent the engine from freezing during cold weather.
Is antifreeze the same a radiator fluid? Not quite. Anti-freeze is the undiluted liquid that you mix with water (usually 50:50). The proper term for the mixture is "Coolant".
Antifreeze is a concentrated product, normally based on glycol and contains inhibitors, according to the AA. Some types have to be diluted with water to make them a suitable concentration before use, which is where the name coolant comes from. Coolant is a 50-50 mix of antifreeze (ethylene glycol) and water.
